Children need rules and boundaries, just like they need attention. Children have to be taught discipline and it is up to the parents to teach them discipline from a young age. It helps them develop self-control and is also a way to encourage, guide and teach them how to think for themselves.  Here are some suggestions on how to discipline your child effectively:-

1) Let it happen…

The basic concept behind this method is to let nature run its course when appropriate. Some examples: If your child leaves his toy at school, it may get lost or ruined. If your child forgets his school handbook, then he may not be rewarded by his teacher at school.

2) Logical consequences…

Provide a logical consequence when there is no natural one. For example, it would be dangerous for your child to run out in the middle of the road. Tell your child what the consequences are for continued bad behavior. Missing out on things, such as a bedtime story for very young children, or taking away their favourite toy can often be worse than a smack.

3) Distraction…

With toddlers, distraction can be an effective tool in redirecting attention from something that they want to do. For example, if a child wants to jump on the sofa, suggest going outside and jumping on the trampoline. The key is to make the distraction sound as exciting and interesting as possible. Also, this also allows the parent to use positive discipline - one can say “why don’t you do this instead” rather than use the words “don’t so that!”

4) Rewarding…

Intended to support the other ways to discipline, rewarding requires the parent to praise positive behavior. Saying “thank you” or giving some words of encouragement are always useful after good behaviour can be seen. A points system is always useful – you can stick a chart on the fridge and add stickers to it when you see good behaviour, which can be traded for “bigger” rewards or privileges.

A mix of all these methods is probably going to be the most effective, but the most important thing is is that you are consistent and fair when disciplining your child. Along the way, they will also learn to enjoy to be independent and safe at a young age.

In case of Typhoon 8….

All classes (including playgroup, RWI, writing etc. ) will be cancelled.

If the Typhoon No. 8 is lowered BEFORE 12pm, then all lessons will resume as normal from 2pm. It is entirely at the parents’ discretion whether to attend classes in the afternoon.

If the Typhoon No. 8 is lowered AFTER 12pm, then all lessons will be cancelled for today. KiddiKraft will remain closed.
